Once upon a time, long before the internet or even before computers were invented store owners and merchandisers relied on signs as the only means of communication that would tell passers by what kind of store was selling what kinds of goods or services Originally, hand painted signs were the created by traveling artists that carried supplies and palettes Signs would hang above the storefront making it simple for passers by and folks looking for a specific shop to find what they were looking for
In some instances certain kinds of shops used universal symbols in their signage Barbershops today are still easily recognized by the red and while poles that stand out by the front door In Europe symbols of three hanging balls indicate a pawnshop and a small steel beaker with a grinding tool sticking out of it represents a chemist or pharmacist Originally used by pharmacists to finely grind powder before putting it into capsules, this symbol is still in use today and can be found on signs next to the initials Rx
With the introduction of the electric light bulb, signs changed to include lit up bulbs that surrounded the exterior of the advertising medium Instead of being painted of wood, signs could be painted on glass that enclosed light bulbs in a framed box The box signs were lit at twilight as the sun set and were still easily readable in the daylight
As time moved on signs became illuminated with neon gas inside shaped glass tubes Neon signs lit up the night for retailers that extended their hours to accommodate the schedules of their customers and turn greater profits for the convenience of being open late Attracting people from a distance, neon signs grew in popularity as sign makers learned new ways to bend and manipulate the glass tubing into remarkable shapes and colors City skylines became a illuminated with the bright lights and neon glows
Today a combination of hand crafted signs incorporate neon and internal lighting mechanisms to illuminate the night and advertise storefronts and shopping centers Eye catching banners and posters are also widely used both indoors and out to capture the attention and imagination of shoppers and passers by Brightly colored logos and corporate trademarks follow the age honored traditions of those early advertising signs by marking buildings and making it easy for consumers to find what they are looking for
